Winchuck ATV Crash Takes a Life

Just before 4:00 pm, Tuesday, July 2, the Curry County Sheriff’s Office received information through the Brookings Police Department that there was an ATV accident about seven and a half miles east of U.S. Highway 101 on the Winchuck River Road involving several subjects with multiple serious injuries. Brookings PD toned out Cal-Ore Life Flight and the Reach Helicopter to respond to the area along with the Harbor Fire Department.

Curry County Sheriff’s Deputies responded and determined that there was one ATV Quad involved and there had been one adult female operating it with one younger juvenile on the seat in front of her and two juveniles sitting on the front rack of the ATV. The ATV went over backwards from the gravel road dropping about twenty-seven feet straight down into the Winchuck River drainage. First responders determined two of the four passengers were injured and they were able to get them back to the roadway. They then transported them down river to a field where one of the juveniles was transported by ground ambulance to Sutter Coast Hospital, and the adult female operator of the ATV was flown to Rogue Valley Hospital in Medford.

The Curry County Sheriff’s Office was later notified by Rogue Valley Hospital that the operator of the ATV, forty-seven-year-old Gina Theising from Simi Valley California had died from her injuries. Next of Kin has been notified.

Our condolences go out to the family.
