Widespread Flooding and a Landslide Close 2 State Parks and Cape Arago Hwy.

Both Sunset Bay State Park Campground as well as Shore Acres State Park just south of Charleston including Cape Arago Hwy., were forced to shutdown Friday, January 3rd after flooding and substantial damage from a landslide undermined the highway south of Sunset Bay State Park.

According to the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, Sunset Bay State Park Campground was evacuated Friday morning, however, visitors could still access day use areas and the Oregon Coast Trail through the Shore Acres and Sunset Bay State Parks, with these accesses possibly also being closed this weekend.

No estimate has been given regarding the time frame of the restoration of Cape Arago Hwy. however it is expected to be closed for an extended period of time with more rain and destabilization of the landslide expected through the weekend.
