On Wednesday, August 22, a van and small travel trailer became stuck in the surf near the Del Ray Beach access in Gearhart, Oregon according to a press release from the Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office.
After the van and the trailer became stuck at approximately 4:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, the owner of the vehicle contacted law-enforcement and reportedly several tow companies in attempts to extract the vehicles before being destroyed by the surf.
However, a tow truck was not able to arrive on the scene until the vehicle was halfway submerged in the ocean. Continued attempts will be made to remove the vehicle as safety permits.
According to the Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office, the owner of the vehicle has remained in the area and has been cleaning up debris as it washes on shore and the United States Coast Guard has been at the location and is continuing to monitor for any oil or fuel leakage.
Regarding operating motor vehicles on Oregon beaches, the ‘1967 Beach Bill’, ruled that the public has free use of Oregon beaches, which are designated as a state recreation area. The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department regulates vehicle use on the beach through its ocean shore rules, and the state agency has established zones where cars are restricted or prohibited, taking into account concerns for safety, public access, scenic and recreation values, conservation and beach management.
