On Saturday night just before 11:00 pm, Rescue crews from Rural Metro Fire, AMR-Josephine County, and the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety were dispatched to a motor vehicle crash on Rogue River Hwy at Greens Creek Rd.
Firefighters arrived and found a single vehicle approximately 75′ down a steep embankment, with the driver unable to get out due to the precarious and unstable position of the vehicle.
A rope system was rigged to quickly reach the vehicle, then a ladder was used to span across a ravine to the vehicle and retrieve the driver. He was transported to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
The driver, who works for a local taxi company, indicated the crash occurred during a brief but near white-out snow flurry that passed through the area. Evidently, in lieu of calling 911, he called family members and then remained inside the vehicle for approximately 1/2 hour.
An OSP Trooper driving by stopped when he noticed people standing on the side of the road looking over the edge.
The incident serves as a reminder to use caution when driving in inclement weather and to avoid unnecessary delays in emergency services by calling 911 immediately.
