On January 24th, at approximately 9:25 pm, Medford Police officers responded to a single-vehicle accident on Crater Lake Avenue at Brookhurst Street. Initial reports indicated the single occupant was trapped inside the vehicle, which was beginning to catch fire.
Officers were on scene within minutes and found the vehicle, a 2005 Nissan Altima, had been traveling southbound on Crater Lake Avenue before veering off the roadway and colliding with a power pole. The pole was sheared off and low hanging power lines created additional concerns for emergency personnel.
With the assistance of Mercy Flights and the Medford Fire Department, the driver, 20-year-old Andres Laris, was safely extricated from his vehicle. Laris was transported to a Medford area hospital in serious condition.
Evidence obtained at the scene led officers to believe that alcohol was a factor in the crash and Laris was later cited for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, Reckless Driving, and Criminal Mischief. Laris remains hospitalized for injuries sustained in the crash.
