Vehicle Loses Control Crashes on N. Bank Chetco River Road

The Curry County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 transfer call through the Brookings Police Department at approximately 9:15 pm Tuesday evening December 26th. The original call came from a witness to a vehicle crash on the North Bank of Chetco River Road near the Social Security River Bar. The caller stated that they witnessed a car with three occupants lose control and crash over an embankment, ejecting all three occupants.

Curry County Sheriff’s Deputies responded as well as the Brookings Fire Department and Cal Ore Life Flight. Deputies along with an Oregon State Trooper arrived within minutes of the call and saw where a 1999 Pontiac Convertible had left the roadway over an embankment and rolled over ejecting the driver, seventeen-year-old Gabriel Parson, front passenger eighteen-year-old Issabella Vermaak and rear passenger twenty-year-old Travis Trevino Jr., all from the Brookings area.

Trevino was able to crawl back to the roadway while Issabella Vermaak was found pinned under the front part of the vehicle. Deputies and Medics attended to Vermaak while the Brookings Fire Department used airbags to lift the vehicle and free her from underneath. Cal Ore Life Flight transported all three occupants to Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City, Ca. with minor to serious injuries.

The vehicle was pulled back to the roadway by Wes’s Towing and Deputies located unopened alcoholic beverages in and around the vehicle. Speed is believed to be the contributing factor at this time. It appeared that at the time of the crash, none of the occupants of the vehicle were wearing seatbelts. Based on statements, the three occupants were heading up river to attend an outdoor party.

On Wednesday, December 27th, the Curry County Sheriff’s Office learned that Trevino had been flown to Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene for injuries he had sustained during the vehicle crash. Both Parson and Vermaak had been discharged from the hospital with minor injuries.

The Curry County Sheriff’s Office along with the Oregon State Police will continue the investigation and information will be forwarded to the Curry County District Attorney and Juvenile Department in consideration of criminal charges for Reckless Driving, Reckless Endangering, and Assault.
