Just after 10:00 pm on Friday evening, February 9th, a 911 call generated from the U.S. Coast Guard station Chetco River resulted in the Curry County Sheriff and Harbor Fire Department being dispatched to the Harbor Basin in regards to a vehicle in the water.
Two women from the Medford area and two men local to the Brookings-Harbor area were in the SUV that had driven into the harbor adjacent to the U.S. Coast Guard station.
The four occupants were reportedly being assisted out of the sinking vehicle by members of the U.S. Coast Guard as First Responders from the Harbor Fire Department and Curry County Sheriffs officers arrived on the scene.
The two male occupants exited the vehicle and fled the scene on foot prior to the Sheriff deputies arrival to the area and efforts to locate those individuals were immediately undertaken. One of the two male individuals was located walking along Lower Harbor Road within minutes while the other male was last located at Highway 101 and Benham Lane area.
Both women were located at the vehicle location and the driver was later cited for driving under the influence.
The vehicle was later extricated from the river channel early Saturday morning.
