Sea conditions will promote the possibility for dangerous sneaker waves Friday afternoon October 27th, through Saturday evening October 28th. This is due to a longer period northwest swell arriving at the coast, which will be sufficient to produce these waves. These waves are said to sneak because they are suddenly higher and go much farther inland than the overall wave conditions.
The hazard caused by a sneaker wave is not necessarily related to the size of the surf, but the relative size of the water running up the beach. The period of calm preceding a sneaker wave causes beachgoers to inaccurately assess the hazard, leading to behavior that places them in harm’s way, such as getting too close to the surf.
Sneaker waves are capable of quickly pulling a person into the ocean leaving them susceptible to rip currents, hypothermia, cold water paralysis, and drowning. They can also move large logs littered on beaches, possibly hitting or rolling over unsuspecting beachgoers.
If you are not paying attention, you could be swept out to sea. It is always best to stay off jetties, but especially Friday afternoon October 27th, through Saturday evening October 28th. And if you have to visit the beach, keep your eye on the sea.
