Upset at the Powder Puff Charity Game

The Junior/Sophomore team celebrates the 'underclassmen' upset 'Powder Puff' victory.

It’s Homeoming week at Brookings-Harbor High School, and Wednesday night was the annual ‘Powder Puff’ pitting the Senior/Freshman classes in blue, against the Junior/Sophomore classes in red. What would start out as a crash course in football rules and etiquette quickly broke out into a pride driven battle for ‘Powder Puff’ football supremacy.

What started out as a fun game filled with laughter and youthful exuberance quickly changed it’s tone when junior Avana Pettus picked off a Senior/Freshman team pass and returned it 60 yards before being stopped inside the 10 yard line. The Junior/Sophomore team would fail to get into the endzone turning the ball over on downs.

As the two teams battled, it wouldn’t be until the 11:00 minute mark in the first half that senior Elena Morosky would break away and put the Senior/Freshman in scoring position. The Senior/Freshman class would strike first when senior Mickey Fulton ran a perfect skinny post passing route catching the ball and then scampering 17 yards for the Senior/Freshman touchdown.

But the Junior/Sophomore team would not be outdone as sophomore Lexi Schofield caught a short pass over the middle and ran 80 yards putting the Junior/Sophomore team within yards of the endzone. As time ran out in the first half, junior Avana Pettus would take the ball on an end around sweep and outrace the field into the endzone knotting up the score at 12 before the half.

Long breakaway runs were the play du jour, and the Senior/Freshman team again handed the ball to senior Mickey Fulton who ripped off an 85 yard run into the endzone putting the Senior/Freshman team up 12-6 early in the 2nd half.

The Junior/Sophomore team again would answer driving downfield again putting themselves in scoring position. After a 20 yard scamper by junior Alana Nalls, the Junior/Sophomore team lined quickly putting the ball in play before the Senior/Freshman team was set and handed the ball to junior Sidney Alexander who took the ball 16 yards on a sweep to the left into the endzone, and after converting the extra point, the Junior/Sophomore team led 12-13.

In the final minutes of the contest, both teams would pull out all the stops with trick plays and long gains. But determination on both defensive sides would keep the score at 12-13 and sophomore Sierra Fitzhugh would keep it that stopping a Senior/Freshman pass play with an interception.

But with just minutes left to play, the Senior/Freshman team would take a chance on 4th and 10 and convert. They would then put together a determined drive and call a trick play with the old “uncovered player talking to the coach on the sideline” play. Even though the Junior/Sophomore team was not fooled, the pass still went to senior Mickey Fulton who would make a spectacular catch at midfield and race to 15 yard line. But the trick play and risk-taking, the Senior/Freshman team had no timeouts left and simply ran out of time just yards from the endzone.

In an honorable game in which all the proceeds went to the local charity for Katalyn’s Cause, the Junior/Sophomore team escaped with the underclassmen upset 13-12.

A great game for a great local cause. Congratulations to all those who put this event together, and thank you to all who donated to Katelyn’s Cause.
