The U.S. Coast Guard assisted the U.S. Geological Survey to assist in the deployment of seismograph censors following the 7.0 earthquake that struck late Thursday morning, December 5th, off the Pacific Northwest coast.
On Saturday, December 28th, the 87-foot “Predator class” patrol boat, the the USCGC BARRACUDA, stationed at Woodley Island Marina, adjacent to downtown Eureka, reported that the he U.S. Coast Guard sector Humboldt Bay had assisted in the deployment of over 120 U.S. Geological Survey sensors.
These Rapid Response Ocean Bottom Seismograph sensors are a type of seismograph that can be deployed on the seafloor for weeks, months, and even years to record shaking from seismic waves.
The sensors measure the magnitude of underwater and remote earthquakes and are expected to be used by the U.S. Geological Survey for aftershock detection and fault imaging.
