Earlier in the month, U.S. Coast Guard Sector/Air Station Humboldt Bay, and a Humboldt-Del Norte CALFIRE Unit partnered with Green Diamond Resource Company, a Forest Stewardship Company to maintain and preserve the crash site of the 1964 USCG Rescue Helicopter 1363, known as HH-52.
On December 22, 1964, during the historic storm that flooded much of Humboldt County, the HH-52 crew was deployed to rescue trapped residents.
After several successful rescues, their vision was obscured, and the HH-52 crashed in the forest near Crannell.
Tragically, two U.S. Coast Guard personnel, a member of the Royal Canadian Navy, and four civilians perished in the crash.
Remnants of the helicopter remain on Green Diamond’s timberlands and are forever memorialized and protected in memory of the lives lost, and the lives saved.
