Two quakes struck the northern California coast early Tuesday evening approximately 40 miles southeast of Eureka.
The first quake was recorded by the U.S.Geological Survey at 5:24pm just over 3 miles northeast of Petrolia registering a 4.4 magitude at 18 miles deep.
Just over an hour later, a second quake registering 3.4 magnitude struck at 6:33pm 5 miles northeast of Petrolia at 27 miles in depth.
The quakes did not generate a tsunami or tsunami warning.
