Two men, who claimed to be retired CHP officers from Del Norte County, in Crescent City, were arrested after allegedly being found with concealed handguns and more than $100,000 in cash as they traveled through Stanislus County on Interstate 5 according to a press release from the California Highway Patrol.
On the afternoon of Sept. 6, a CHP Central Division canine officer noticed a 2007 white Chevrolet pickup making vehicle code violations while traveling north on Highway 5 in Fresno County.
According to the CHP report, the officer made an enforcement stop and it was at that time that the two men allegedly identified themselves as retired police officers. The officer who made the stop issued a written warning and the two men were allowed to leave.
Ironically, the same officer came across the same 2007 white Chevrolet pickup traveling north on Interstate 5 later that same day at approximately 7:20 pm. Again the officer pulled the vehicle over for another alleged vehicle code violation. During this vehicle stop, a second officer was requested,
According to CHP, the officers found two loaded and concealed handguns along with two bags filled with cash. The men allegedly gave contradicting statements to officers so they were taken into custody and transported to the Merced Area CHP office.
47-year old Brian Lane Clemann, and 48-year-old Richard Peter Barry, both of Crescent City, were arrested for illegal possession of concealed firearms and possession of more than $100,000 derived from the unlawful sale, possession for sale, transportation or manufacturing of a controlled substance.
CHP task force officers were called to handle the investigation. The two men have since been released and the case will be submitted to the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office.
