Tuesday Afternoon Humbug Mountain Fire Quickly Contained

At approximately 3:00pm Tuesday, September 1st, a fire was reported just north of Humbug Mountain and south of Port Orford, and units from Port Orford Fire, Sixes Fire Dept., Ophir Fire Dept., Gold Beach Fire Dept., Coos Fire Patrol and the U.S. Forest Service began to stage at Humbug Mountain State Park in initial attacks on the fire.

Due a very quick ground response and attacks from air assets with afternoon weather conditions bringing a cooling marine layer onshore, the fire was contained quickly.

Three helicopters, one air tanker and two single engine aircraft made quick work of the potentially dangerous blaze after the fires progression slowed significantly with the drastic afternoon coastal weather change.

As of reports at around 8:00pm Tuesday evening, the fire was 100% contained and the threat of power interruption feared as the fire burned near transmission lines became very unlikely. Fire crews continued to ‘mop-up’ through out the night and into the early morning hours.
