Very early Tuesday morning, October 8th, a commercial semi truck and trailer traveling north bound on U.S. Hwy. 101, left the roadway and rolled onto its side in a culvert adjacent to the roadway.
Due to the size, weight and difficult positioning of the crash, the scene was secured for several hours as CalTrans District 1 and the California Highway Patrol coordinated wreckage removal efforts.
U.S. Hwy. 101 was closed at about 1 p.m. in the Smith River area of Del Norte County and Fred D. Haight Drive was used as a detour while crews assist with the aftermath of a collision.
Just before 4:00pm Wednesday afternoon, some 12 hours after the initial crash and almost 3 hours after U.S. Hwy. 101 was closed to clear the crash scene, Hwy. 101 was reopened to two way traffic.
The driver reportedly sustained minor injuries, and the incident is under further investigation.
