Late Monday afternoon, June 13th, a 911 call was received by Del Norte County Sheriff’s Dispatch regarding a boat sinking with three people in the water, about half a mile off of Whalers Island, in Crescent City.
Del Norte County Sheriff’s Deputies and multiple agencies including CHP, Del Norte ambulance, Search & Rescue, and Crescent City Fire & Rescue immediately responded, and upon the arrival of Sheriff’s Deputies it was discovered that three men from the reported sinking boat had swam to the rocks off the south side of Whalers Island.
One of the men was stranded on a rock about 15 feet out of reach of the initial response team. Incoming tide concerns rising around the rocks prompted emergency response teams to work quickly enabling rescuers to secure the man.
All three men were suffering from severe hypothermia and exhaustion and were transported to Sutter Coast Hospital.
