Playing an altered schedule in observance of Independence Day the week prior, the Bruins Football Association Flag Football program put the kids through their paces last week with two game days in the week, the first on Monday, and the second Wednesday afternoon, and though it was a quick turnaround, there was no shortage of energy Wednesday afternoons games.
The program continues to encourage coach’s to share their experiences, and this week the Compass features Head Coach of the Raiders in the K-3rd Grade division, Forrest Brunson, who shared his thoughts as coach in the Flag Football program.
By day, a countertop fabricator and installer with his family at Majestic Marble and Countertops, coach Brunson, now in his 3rd year coaching for coach Bavaro in the Flag Football program, told the Compass, “I grew up going to school and playing sports with coach Bavaro here in Brookings, and when I signed my boys up for flag football a few years back, coach Bavaro asked if I’d help, and I didn’t hesitate.”
We asked coach Brunson what he hopes the kids take away from his coaching experience, “In this age group, keeping the kids involved in a fun way is very important, and hopefully, in that process, they take away some of the basic fundamentals of flag football and had fun playing.”
“I think it’s great to see what coach Bavaro has done with the Bruins Football Association program,” he told the Compass, “and I hope to see more coaches and players participate in the future and continue to get the younger kids involved into youth football again.”
“One of the things I enjoy the most, is watching the surprise on their faces when they have a little bit of success and the whole team gets excited.” – coach Forrest Brunson
