The National Janitor of the Year Contest has come to a close

Our Kalmiopsis Elementary school head custodian, Frank Hernandez, was named a finalist for a nationwide Janitor of the Year contest this spring. Sponsored by Cintas Corporation, the contest aimed to recognize the best-of-the-best in school janitors and custodians. “Mr. Frank” was one of 10 finalists competing for a $5,000 cash prize along with $5,000 in Cintas and Rubbermaid products and services for his or her school — not to mention bragging rights.

The community support for Mr. Frank was enormous with posters created by the PTO, T-shirts made and worn by staff and students, numerous TV, radio and newspaper interviews, and support from many local business owners. In total, the contest received more than 446,000 online votes. Voting closed April 20, and Mr. Bob Cook of Sands Montessori School in Cincinnati, Ohio, earned the most votes to win.

Although our Mr. Frank was not the ultimate winner, as a finalist, he will receive a $500 check and a Rubbermaid prize package. Mr. Frank did an incredible job representing the Brookings-Harbor School District and our town during the contest. We are so proud of him for being a finalist in this nationwide contest open to janitors and custodians of educational facilities of all levels — elementary through college.

Many thanks to our awesome community who managed to secure an unbelievable 446,000 votes.

The Wild Coast Compass is proud and honored to have participated in this program with Mr. Frank Hernandez.

Congratulations and thank you Mr. Frank Hernandez for all you do everyday in our community.
