Police began investigating a shooting that took place at about 8:33am Saturday morning, June 11th after Coos County 911 Center received two 911 calls indicating a woman was “down” outside a residence located on Cape Arago Highway in the unincorporated area of Coos County.
Upon arrival to the scene, officers found 34 year old Coos Bay resident Amber Townsend, who had been shot multiple times with what appeared to have been a shotgun, lying adjacent to Cape Arago Highway. She was transported to Bay Area Hospital where she was declared deceased.
Late Tuesday afternoon, officers investigating the murder of Amber Townsend, identified 37 year old Coos Bay resident Matthew Tyler Mikel, as a potential suspect in that shooting. Investigators discovered Mikel was staying at the Global Inn in Coos Bay.
At approximately 7:34pm Tuesday evening investigators contacted the potential suspect at the Global Inn and an altercation then ensued. An officer from the Coos County Sheriff’s Office and an officer from the Coos Bay Police Department fired their handguns and Mikel was struck by at least one round and a“shots fired” call to dispatch was received at 7:36pm.
Medical personnel were immediately dispatched and Mikel was then transported to Bay Area Hospital before being declared deceased at the hospital.
