Rural Metro Fire responded to reports of a structure fire just after noon, June 22nd, on Hog Creek Road which quickly escalated to a 2-alarm incident after first-arriving engines from Rural Metro Fire arrived to find a large residence with significant fire involvement.
The 2nd alarm mobilized 10 units from Rural Metro Fire, 2 units from Grants Pass Fire Rescue and several units and a hand-crew from Oregon Department of Forestry, to contain the blaze as well as units from Jackson County Fire District #1 (Rogue River), Illinois Valley Fire District, and Applegate Valley Fire District to help cover additional calls as part of the Rogue Valley Mutual Aid System
Crews worked to battle flames, while also battling one of the warmest days of the year and two Rural Metro Fire firefighters were treated on scene by AMR-Josephine County for heat exhaustion. Nobody was home at the time, and the fire was fully controlled about 5 hours later. The cause remains under investigation.
Fire from the burning structure did spot into surrounding vegetation, but was kept minimal and posed no threat to the neighbors due to the extensive “defensible space” work the property owner had been conducting over the spring.
