The Bruin girls started the first set strong, jumping out to a 5-4 lead early, challenging everything on their side of he net keeping St. Mary’s off balance early. But the Lady Crusaders would rally, with both teams trading points midway through the set, before St. Mary’s took a late lead to finish the set with a 21-25 win.

Senior, #7, Kami Koepnick, with the spike.

With a one set lead, St. Mary’s took an early lead, returning Bruin girls attacks and keeping the ball on the Bruin girls half of court, forcing mistakes and allowing the Lady Crusaders to establish a wide lead. The Bruin girls would find their way and close the gap with pure hustle plays, but the St. Mary’s lead would be to big to overcome as the Lady Crusaders went on to take the second set, 18-25.

Freshman Paige Fallert, #3, with the return.

In the third set, the Bruin girls refused to let the Lady Crusaders take a lead early, establishing an early 6-3 lead themselves that St. Mary’s would struggle to close throughout the set. The Bruins girls would extend their third set lead to 16-7 mid way through the set and St. Mary’s would post a furious rally closing the gap to within 4 points before the Bruin girls would finish the set with a 25-21 win.

Senior, Makenna Ratliff, #6, hitting through the block.

The fourth set showed a Lady Crusaders team desperate to keep the Bruin girls from building on their third set win, taking an early 4-7 lead in the fourth set that they would not relinquish. The Bruin girls frantically tried to keep pace, keeping the set close late before St.Mary’s took the set win and the match 1-3.
