Southern Oregon Crab Season Remains Delayed

Although commercial crabbing will open in all fisheries surrounding the Brookings- Harbor to Cape Blanco area, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife announced Thursday, January 11th, that the commercial Dungeness crab fishery in the area from Cape Blanco to the OR/CA border (southern Oregon area) will not open on January 15th.

Due to the detection of elevated levels of domoic acid in samples collected on January 2nd, the fishery in this area will remain closed for at least two more weeks while additional sampling is conducted and an announcement will be made when results are available.

The commercial Dungeness crab fishing season for Humboldt, Mendocino and Del Norte counties is opening Jan. 15, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife announced Wednesday. January 10th.

For Oregon, the Dungeness crab fishery will open from Cape Blanco north to the Columbia River on January 15th.

Any vessels that begin fishing for crab anywhere within the Tri-State region (U.S. Canada border to Point Arena, CA) prior to the opening of the southern Oregon area must wait until 30 days after the area opens to begin fishing there. The opening of the southern Oregon area will include provisions for a pre-soak period and the Department will attempt to notify industry of the opening structure at least five days prior to the beginning of the pre-soak period.
