Week 6 of the BHHS varsity Bruin football teams schedule sent the Bruins to Myrtle Creek to challenge the South Umpqua Lancers, sitting on a 3-2 record coming off a 76-7 win over the St. Mary’s Crusaders last Friday night.
A revitalized Bruin team, coming off their over-time win last Friday night, got off the bus in Myrtle Creek and walked into a buzz-saw on the Lancers homefield. A South Umpqua team full of seniors, determined to not suffer the same fate as Phoenix, jumped on the young Bruin team refusing to let Bruins gain any momentum, who looked up at the scoreboard to find they were trailing 0-26 after the Lancers scored 2 defensive touchdowns in the first quarter of play.
South Umpqua would put the ball on the ground to start their first drive in the second half, turning the ball over to the Bruins who would take a deep shot on a fly route down the sidelines, caught by senior Aiden Petersen, #11, and into the endzone 90 yards later.
The much larger Lancer team picked up where they left off in second quarter, running the score up to 0-40 late in the second quarter. Bruin freshman, #10, Owen Austin, returned a Lancer kick-off the length of the field, which would be followed up by a Michael Fulton extra point putting the Bruins on the board before the half.
Kyler Christensen #2, stepped in front off a Lancer pass late in the third period ending another South Umpqua drive and the Bruins would find the endzone one more time after another deep Bruin quarterback Grady Maylin pass completion set up a quick shot into the endzone. Although the Bruins would fall 19-47 to the Lancers, the Bruin defense would hold South Umpqua scoreless in the second period.
“They were the more physical team tonight,” coach Bavoro said after the game. “We didn’t play good up front on either side of the ball, but it was good to see our special teams make some plays tonight.”
Next week is Homecoming for the Bruins, who will be hosting the St. Mary’s Crusaders at Bruin’s Elmer Bankus field with a 7:00pm kick-off.
