Shew Grand Slam Helps Propel Bruins to 6-0 Season Start

After meeting the Cascade Christian Challengers earlier in the week at home, coach Keith Wallin and his boys varsity BHHS baseball team traveled to Medford Friday afternoon to complete the 3 game series with a double-header to decide who would come away with the series win.

Both teams met Tuesday in Brookings and the Bruins controlled the Challengers from the first pitch, and the trip to Medford went much the same.

The Bruins jumped out early Friday afternoon after the Challenger starting pitcher walked the number two and number three Bruin batters consecutively, setting up a Jacub McCollum #20 double on a 2 ball 1 strike count that scored 2, giving the Bruins a 2-0 lead after the top of the first inning.

Sophomore Kyle Burger, who threw 3 innings against the Challengers in relief Tuesday with 6 strike-outs, took the mound for coach Wallin and struck out three in two innings of work.

The Bruins bats buried the Challengers in the second inning, racking up 8 more unanswered runs off of 4 walks and 4 hits, and the Challengers would not recover.

In the second game, the Bruins only managed one run in their first at bat, and coach Wallin handed the ball to right-hander junior Jason Deshon #16 who struck-out the first batter he saw in three straight pitches, only to walk the next batter and allow a hit scoring the walk to tie the game at 1 at the end of one.

Bats would be quiet from both sides until the 3rd inning when senior Payton Armentrout #1 would get on base after being hit, senior Adam Shew #13 would walk and then both would steal home. And then in the top of the 4th the Bruins put the game out of reach, adding 13 runs off 10 hits and 5 walks in the inning capped off by an Adam Shew grand slam.

The Bruins would go on to take the series 3-0, scoring 46 runs, allowing 9, racking up 53 hits and 0 errors.

Coach Wallin told the Compass after the game “Pitching was great today and the guys swung the bats real well today capping off a great week of baseball.” he said.”We are getting better every week and keep telling our guys to play our best ball in May…we are looking forward to seeing what we can accomplish next.

The Bruins face-off against the 3-0 South Umpqua Lancers in Myrtle Creek Tuesday afternoon.
