Sheriffs Officer Saves Woman’s Life

Here at the Wild Coast Compass, we receive reports of bad things happening to good people on a consistent basis. Robberies, drugs, vehicle accidents and physical abuse are but a few of the items, unfortunately, reported on daily.

It is on a rare occasion that the good news can be seen let alone be reported on. So when we see good news and quite literally can show you this good news, we are going to take that opportunity.

This can be no better demonstrated than on December 21st, 2017 at 6:51 p.m., when Angelica Sandoval would be forever impacted by her “Angel”, Marion County Sheriff Deputy Gregg Ramseyer. Ms. Sandoval, an employee at DeDe’s Deli located at 132 Lancaster Drive SE in Salem was in her office working when she heard a deputy asking for video footage from their parking lot.

Deputy Ramseyer was in the store investigating a hit and run crash and believed the restaurant’s video surveillance may have captured the incident. Before Ms. Sandoval could help she began choking on a potato chip and could no longer breathe. Another employee Cassie Sarff, recognized Ms. Sandoval was choking so she attempted the Heimlich Maneuver and swept her mouth using her finger.

Deputy Ramseyer seeing what was unfolding in front of him radioed for paramedics and came to the aide of Ms. Sandoval. Although the Heimlich was being performed by Ms. Sarff, Deputy Ramseyer recognized Ms. Sandoval was not improving and now turning blue. Deputy Ramseyer took over for Ms. Sarff and performed several cycles of the maneuver clearing the obstruction which allowed Ms. Sandoval to breathe normally.

Commander Eric Hlad was quoted as saying, “Each day I am amazed with our deputy sheriff’s dedication to the safety of our visitors and residents. We could not be more proud of Deputy Ramseyer and his ability to recognize an emergency and take llife-saving action.”
