Schofield Goes Off for 23 with Five 3’s in Bruin Win

Alternating wins and losses is not what Coach Gonzales’ BHHS varsity Bruins basketball team finds acceptable. The Bruins took to the road to visit the South Umpqua Lancers with the intent of starting to put together a win streak, and that is exactly what they did.

Wasting no time after the tip, the Bruins pressed and ran with abandon. The Bruins applied pressure early causing the Lancers to turn the ball over, and the Bruins then ran those turnovers into points. Early in the game, it was tough to decide which side of the Bruin game was playing better, the offense or the defense. Defensively the Bruins didn’t allow the Lancers to score a basket in the first quarter of play while the offense ran up 24 points in the first period. The 3 points the Lancers scored were from free throws.

Led by senior forward Luke Beaman #0, who led Bruin scoring in the first period hitting two baskets and a 3 pointer for 7 points in the period, and both senior Brig Schofield #32 and Evan Fronckowiak #12 who each hit a basket and a 3 pointer for 5 points each in the first put 24 points on the board and held the Lancers to just 3 points.

In the second period, the Bruins put another 19 points. Schofield continued his hot hand dropping two more 3’s and went perfect from the line hitting for 8 points in the quarter. Derek Bonde established a presence in the paint controlling the boards and scored 4 of the 19 Bruin points before the half taking a 43-15 lead into the break.

South Umpqua came out in the third quarter determined to close the gap and make a game out of it. The Lancers strategy was to aggressively drive into the paint, and once in the lane to create the foul. The strategy worked as Bonde and Vanginderen quickly collected the fouls as the Lancers got to the line 7 times hitting 5 of them. The Bruins sophomore forward Logan Holler #1 led Bruin scoring in the quarter dropping three baskets for 6 of the 20 Bruin points.

The Bruins put the game away in the final period with again Luke Beaman leading the way. Beaman repeated his first quarter with two baskets and a 3 pointer. Also, Evan Fronckowiak hit a bucket and went 3 of 4 from the line and Brig Schofield hit one of his five 3 pointers in the game and led all scorers in the game with 23 points as the Bruins rolled to an 82-45 road win.

“We came out strong tonight and shot the ball well start to finish. I was proud of our shot selection and defensive intensity. When we play like that we are a tough team to match up with.” said Coach Gonzales after the game.

The Bruins will not play again until next Friday, January 25th on the road against a hungry 2-2 Cascade Christian team a 6:00 pm.
