Rescue at Rainie Falls

Nearly a dozen rescuers from Rural Metro Fire – Josephine County and AMR-Josephine County treked into Rainie Falls this afternoon to extract an injured hiker. It took three hours to carry the patient out to the trailhead over the narrow and rocky trail. The operation was additionally complicated by a number of trees down across the trail, requiring mitigation efforts by firefighters along the way. The patient was eventually transported to Three Rivers Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The trail to Rainie Falls sees its share of accidents each year. Unfortunately, these accidents remind hikers how remote the Wild and Scenic Rogue River corridor can be. Due to a lack of cell phone service, it can easily take an hour or more to hike out and drive to the nearest phone. Then, an additional wait comes while emergency personnel are responding to the scene.

Help doesn’t come fast down at Rainie Falls, so hikers are urged to go prepared and hike with caution.
