On Friday morning, 26 year old Lynzee DeSantis was traveling on Somoa Blvd., about 5minutes away from Humboldt State University in Eureka California, when her car was struck by a Red Tail Hawk.

After watching the video she shared on her Facebook page, the Wild Coast  Compass contacted Ms. DeSantis to hear from her the incredible story of what had actually    happened.

She told us that at first she thought to herself, “that didn’t just happen. Then I panicked because I thought it was dead.” She said at that point she slowly pulled over and realized that the female Red Tail Hawk was not dead.

She said it was at that point she slowly pulled over and realized that the female Red Tail Hawk was stuck in the grill, and not dead.

The Hawk had struck the vehicle, which was traveling at about 55 mph at the time and had hit the vehicle perfectly in the space of the grill with its head becoming stuck.

Ryan Jensen after freeing the Red Tail Hawk

Not wanting to move her car too far that could cause more injury to the bird, it was at that moment that a good Samaritan name Ryan Jensen pulled over and asked her what had happened.

At first, the two thought about contacting somebody to come and help the bird, but they feared that the struggling bird would hurt itself trying to escape.

That’s when Ryan went to his vehicle and returned with what appears to be a small paintbrush and pryed the grill apart to free the Hawk’s head.

After the bird was freed and had recovered enough to move on, Lynzee tells us she was “Relieved. I cried…, I’ve never been so happy to see a bird fly”.
