On Saturday, it will be Raining Cats & Dogs when the Rotary Club of Brookings-Harbor drops thousands of cats and dogs from a helicopter.
And the “owner” of the cat or dog closest to the target pole will win $5,000 in cash and a gift card.
“You do what?!?” We always have to explain for the newbies: They are plastic toys, not real pets.
It’s simply a way to determine the winners of the prizes in the Rotary Club’s annual fund-raising raffle — infinitely more interesting than pulling a ticket stub out of a basket. (But if the weather scrubs the drop, that’s exactly what we do.)
The result is the same, and it’s not too late to purchase your chances. In addition to the top prize, there are lots of other prizes being offered.
Best of all, every $5 purchase of a cat or dog will go toward projects in the community. The Rotary Club activities include college scholarships, shoes for needy children, dictionaries for third graders, food deliveries to programs Curry County, water safety lessons, exchange students, and more.
And, since it’s unusual to see anything dropped from a helicopter (weather permitting), the club makes a party of the event on the Kite Field at the Port of Brookings-Harbor, with lots of family fun.
Last year, I was in the center of the fun: Someone decided I should be one of the judges out measuring which dog or cat was closest to the pole. Why does it take so long? Because the first three people have to guesstimate and then three people have to measure, and the further out you go, the longer it takes to get it right.
This year, I can’t be there — but that’s another Rotary story for another day.
