Grants Pass Fire Rescue along with American Medical Response responded to a reported person not breathing at the Grants Pass WinCo location Wednesday June 24th.
Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived on scene and found bystanders as well as WinCo employees administering CPR with an Automated External Defibrillator.
CPR was performed for approximately 4 minutes, enough time for the brain to start dying had this action not taken place.
Once on scene, EMS personnel were informed that 1 shock was administered by the Automated External Defibrillator before their arrival. EMS took over and successfully resuscitated the person within minutes. Paramedics and firefighters maintained spontaneous breathing and circulation during transport to the hospital.
This incident is of note because it is the ideal example of the desired combination of bystander CPR with Automated External Defibrillator, and Grants Pass Fire Rescue thanks the heroic efforts of the bystanders who helped this person. We would like to remind everyone to learn CPR, AED use, and the cardiac chain of survival.
