It’s Homeoming week at Brookings-Harbor High School, and Wednesday night was the annual ‘Powder Puff’ football game pitting the Senior/Sophomore classes in red, against the Junior/Freshman classes in blue. After a crash course in football rules and etiquette quickly broke out into a pride driven battle for ‘Powder Puff’ football supremacy.
What started out as a fun game filled with laughter and youthful exuberance quickly changed it’s tone when junior Avana Pettus took a hand-off and ran 30 yards putting the Senior/Sophomore team on the scoreboard early.
As the two teams battled, turn overs ruled early in the first half as both teams traded mistakes. Pettus had an interception and promptly followed that up when she failed to cover a lateral that would recovered by the Junior/Freshman team. The Junior/Freshman team would then return the favor by fumbling the ball back to the Senior/Sophomore class.
The Junior/Freshman class had long runs from their speedsters Lily Strahm and Sierra Fitzhugh, but they just could not find the endzone.
Long breakaway runs were the play du jour, and the Senior/Sophomore team team again handed the ball to senior Sidney Alexander who ripped off an 25 yard run inside the 5 yard line. Senior/Sophomore coaches Manny Zamora, Josh Smith and Gavin Mills drew up a dive play for Kasi Ulery who powered her way into the endzone giving the Senior/Sophomore team a first half 14-0 lead.
But the Junior/Freshman team would not be outdone as junior Annie Nation took the double reverse and outran the Senior/Sophomore team into the endzone getting the Junior/Freshman team on the scoreboard 14-7.
The Senior/Sophomore team would answer driving downfield again getting themselves out to their own 40 yard line. The hand off would go to Alonna Nalls, who took the ball 60 yards on a sweep to the left and into the endzone, putting the Senior/Sophomore’s up 21-7.
In the final minutes of the contest, both teams would pull out all the stops with trick plays and long gains. But determination on both defensive sides would keep the score at 21-7 going into the final minutes.
But Senior/Sophomore coaches Zamora, Smith and Mills obviously did not trust a 14 point lead against their counterparts Junior/Freshman coaches Andrew Burger and Jacub McCollum. So they drew up another sweep for Alonna Nalls who again would not be stopped as she maneuvered her way through the Junior/Freshman defense for another long run and touchdown extending the lead to 28-7.
That did not sit well with Junior/Freshman coaches Burger and McCollum who then scratched out another set of run plays that got the Junior/Freshman down inside the 10 yard line. Annie Nation would do the honors and get the Junior/Freshman team into the endzone with seconds left.
In an honorable game in which all the proceeds went to the local charity for Katalyn’s Cause, the Senior/Sophomore team dominated the underclassmen taking the 2019 Bruin’s Powder Puff title 28-14.
A great game for a great local cause. Congratulations to all those who put this event together, and thank you to all who donated to Katelyn’s Cause.
