Brookings-Harbor varsity cross-country head coach Jason Fulton and his boys and girls cross-country teams held their season opener Thursday, September 7th as the Bruins hosted their only cross-country event featuring 4 teams from across the region including the Marshfield Pirates, the Fortuna Huskies, and the Pacific Pirates, at Salmon Run golf course for the second time.
Mother Nature was in a good mood Thursday afternoon treating contestants to moderate temperatures on local thermometers at race-time reading 67 degrees as the runners lined up late Thursday afternoon.
The day started off with the girls lining up on the 18th hole starting line before a course that would wind through a course featuring both grass areas and golf cart paths with athletes making two loops on the back nine of the course to complete the 5,000 meter course with one large hill and several bridges.
Coach Fulton sent 4 girls to the starting line for Brookings-Harbor High School, however, it was Fortuna senior Gabby Crosswhite finishing the course first, completing the 5,000 meters in time of 23:36.50, just 12 seconds quicker than Marshfields senior Lily Thompson who finished the course in 23:49.36. Bruins junior Eden Van Maren finished the course with a of 32:11.49, with senior Sadie Harkins finishing in 38:04.95, freshman Nola Keskeny finishing in 40:45.00 and Keana Williams completing the course with a time of 44:49.00.
The Bruins had 7 boys at the starting line to compete with the three other powerful cross country teams in perfect weather as the gun sounded late Thursday afternoon.
Marshfield sophomore Jaxson Stovall jumped out to a substantial early lead ahead of both Elijah Cellura also from Marshfield and Brookings-Harbor’s Peter Goode. Stovall would go on to finish the course first with a time of 17:03.64 with junior Elijah Cellura also from Marshfield finishing in 18:59.88 and Brookings senior Peter Goode finishing third with a time of 19:35.40.
