Medford Valley:
The Carr fire has erupted west of Redding eliminating one of the previous options to escape the smoke.
You’d have to drive down toward or even past Sacramento now. Even so, there are still some options within a day’s drive to get away. Go north on I-5 from Roseburg northward. Also, many locations on the coast remain good options, though some smoke from the Klondike and Natchez fires has made it into Brookings and Crescent City at times.
The satellite loop below shows the thicker smoke in the vicinity of the wildfires northwest of Medford as it makes an afternoon push toward the southeast.
You can also see the marine layer stratus along the coast, the Carr wildfire, which has filled the northern part of the Sacramento Valley with smoke, and afternoon cumulus bubbling up over the mountains to the East.
Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has issued an Air Pollution Advisory…in effect until further notice. This includes an advisory for the Rogue Valley for elevated levels of ozone pollution or smog.
If you can’t make it out of the area for at least a little while, please make sure to seek shelter in well-filtered air-conditioned buildings and if you are outside, utilize an approved mask imprinted with “NIOSH” or “N95” to filter small particulates.
Wildfires burning in the region combined with forecast conditions will cause air quality levels to fluctuate around unhealthy levels.
