According to the Oregon Department of Transportation, a landslide caused the road closure of U.S. Highway 30 roughly 20 miles east of Astoria Tuesday night, November 29th.
The Oregon Department of Transportation stated that US 30 will remain closed through the weekend, until landslide repairs can restore safety enough to reopen at least one lane of travel with flaggers.
The slide started Tuesday night, likely due to rain and strong winds on trees with deep roots in the rocky hillside about 100 feet above the roadway. The slide approximately1,800 cubic yards of mostly rock onto the highway according to Oregon Department of Transportation reports.
In addition to debris removal work, two very large sections of hillside have been determined unsafe by geologists and must be removed before needed repairs can be made to any pavement damage prior to a single lane detour can be reopened with flaggers.
The semi caught in the initial slide has been removed from the debris and the driver of that truck is reportedly okay.
