Man Struck and Killed on Hwy. 101

Multiple agencies including the Oregon State Police, the Brookings Fire Department, Brookings Police Department, and ODOT, responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian crash very early Sunday morning, November 10th, just south of Brookings, near the Chetco River Bridge on Hwy 101, at approximately 1:00am.

According to a Tuesday afternoon Oregon State Police press release, it was determined during preliminary investigation that 39 year old James Lorin Tavel of Brookings, was struck in the northbound lane of Hwy 101 by a Honda CRV.

The Honda operator, Tiffany Camp and passenger, 37 year old Julia Pettigrew of Brookings, were not injured. however, the pedestrian, James Tavel, was declared deceased at the scene.

The operator of the Honda, identified as 34 year old Brookings resident Tiffany Lyne Camp, fled the scene and was arrested later by law enforcement.

Highway 101 was impacted for approximately six hours during the on-scene investigation and remains under criminal investigation at this time.
