Early Wednesday evening, December 4th, the California Highway Patrol responded to reports regarding an individual being struck by a Nissan Rogue.
The Nissan Rogue, operated by Alexandra Danielle Diehl, was traveling north on Northcrest Drive in Del Norte County when, for reasons still under investigation, the Nissan allegedly collided with a male individual with a metal shopping cart walking within a marked crosswalk.
According to the California Highway Patrol press release, after the collision, the male individual was thrown into the #1 southbound lane of Northcrest Drive, and the driver, Alexandra Diehl, fled the scene of the crash in the 2019 Nissan Rogue.
Moments later, a Toyota 4-Runner struck the individuals personal metal shopping cart, before a third vehicle, a white Kia, traveling on the #1 southbound lane of Northcrest Drive noticed a person laying in the roadway and swerved, but was unable to miss the person, and remained at the scene until officers with the California Highway Patrol arrived.
The pedestrian, whose identity has not been released, was transported to Sutter Coast Hospital in critical condition and later succumbed to his injuries later Wednesday evening.
The location of the 2019 Nissan Rogue was identified Wednesday evening at approximately 8:30pm, and the operator of the Nissan, Alexandra Danielle Diehl, was taken into custody after being positively identified as the driver of the vehicle after investigation.
The incident remains under investigation and the Crescent City California Highway Patrol is asking anyone with information pertaining to the incident to contact their office at (707) 218-2000.
