According to a press release by the Klamath Falls District Attorney Eve Costello, a just after 4:00 pm on Thursday, May 31st, the Klamath County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police and Klamath Falls Police Department responded to a report that a 23-year-old Cheney Michael Hardt had attacked family members inside their home with a hatchet.
The press release states that Hardt had attacked his mother first striking her in the head before the man’s father, Shawn Hardt, attempted to intervene and was subsequently seriously injured himself.
After arming himself with a knife, the assailants younger brother 18-year-old Steen Hardt intervened ending the altercation before authorities arrived when he injured his brother.
23-year-old Cheney Michael Hardt was immediately arrested and medical assistance was provided to all family members injured during the attack.
Immediately after authorities took control of the scene, 51-year-old Julie Hardt and 52-year-old Shawn Hardt, the assailant’s mother and father respectively, were transported to a local hospital to be treated for life-threatening injuries.
Late Friday evening it has been reported that the assailant’s mother, 51-year-old Julie Hardt had unfortunately succumbed to her injuries and passed away.
