Just after 11:30pm, Tuesday, March 9th, the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety received a report from a neighbor of a physical disturbance. Minutes later, while the dispatcher was still obtaining information from the complainant with officers en route, another call came in advising of a male subject with multiple stab wounds outside a residence one block away.
Officers then responded to both locations and determined the victim sustained his injuries during the disturbance at the location of the original reported address. He was transported to Rogue Regional Medical Center by American Medical Response Ambulance for treatment and observation of what is being described as non-life threatening injuries.
Minutes before midnight, officers detained two male subjects at the incident location, one of whom was identified as the suspect, Julian Smith. The other subject detained was later released.
In the course of the investigation, it was determined the victim and suspect were acquaintances at the time of the incident and had been drinking. There was an altercation inside the residence, during which Smith stabbed the victim more than 15 times with a fixed-blade knife. The victim was able to walk to a friend’s residence nearby for help.
Based on the investigation, there is no indication of any risk or threats to the public. Smith was lodged at the Josephine County Jail on the listed charges.
