On Friday, August 13th, the Crescent City Police Department responded to a request to remove an intoxicated individual from a local restaurant.
Upon arrival, the individual, later identified as 42 year old Rueben Cha, exited the Taco Bell location and crossed the street to another property. During an attempt to detain Cha , the individual physically resisted and backup was requested.
As two other Crescent City Police Department Officers along with Deputies from the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, the situation degraded to a physical altercation, and while they struggled on the ground, the suspect was able to manipulate the Officers taser while the weapon was still in the holster and tase the Officer.
Two citizens assisted to safely gain control of Cha, who was arrested for public intoxication,, and obstructing/resisting a peace officer.
During the incident Crescent City Police Department Officers responding from different directions had their lights and sirens on, and arrived simultaneously, colliding with each other. No injuries occurred, and both were able to assist with taking Cha into custody.
The vehicle crash is being investigated by the California Highway Patrol. There were no other vehicles involved in the crash.
