Early Tuesday evening, June 25th, the California Highway Patrol responded to reports of a crash on US Hwy. 199 just after 7:00pm. When first units arrived on scene it was determined that the incident was identified as an assault with a deadly weapons, using a vehicle.
According to the California Highway Patrol press release, the suspect, identified as 49 year old Aaron John Smock of Grants Pass, had driven his vehicle into the 67 year old victim, and pinning the victim into his own Logging truck.
Smock then fled the scene northbound on US Hwy. 199 as California Highway Patrol Officers arrived on the scene of the incident, where life saving medical aid was provided before the victim was transported to Sutter Coast Hospital with major injuries.
After fleeing the scene, Smock was located and stopped by Oregon State Police Troopers in Cave Junction Oregon, and was placed under arrest for suspicion of Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and for outstanding warrants out of Oregon.
The incident remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
