Malfunction Allows Non-Disinfected Effluent into Coos-Bay

On Monday, September 9th, the City of Coos Bay reported that approximately 7,000

gallons of non-disinfected effluent was discharged into the Bay for 10 minutes Monday afternoon at the newly constructed wastewater treatment plant (Plant 2) located at 490 Fulton Avenue.

The incident occurred when the contractor that constructed the plant was performing warranty work on the ultraviolet (UV) system. The UV system disinfects the wastewater after it has been treated/processed. The issue was immediately corrected once the contractor realized there was a problem.

The City of Coos Bay has reportedly notified the Oregon Emergency Response System (OERS) and reported this incident to the Department of Environmental Quality. If you have immediate questions or would like further details, please contact the Engineering Division at the City of Coos Bay at (541) 269-8918.
