Local Flag Football Season Wraps Up

Just last week the Brookings local flag football program wrapped up its fourth successful season.

Started as a summer activity by the Curry County Juvenile Department, the program was picked up by the Bruin Football Association in 2018 and grown into the exciting experience enjoyed by almost 100 local boys and girls.

As part of the USA Football organization and member of the NFL flag football program which helps keep costs down and a universal nationwide program to follow, the Bruin Football Association organizes the teams, games and seasons, and high school kids ref the games.

Almost 100 children ranging from Kindergarten to Eigth from Brookings, Del Norte and Gold Beach gathered on Monday and Wednesday afternoons at Azalea Park and played on Co-Ed teams of 5-7 with 5 players playing at a time.

Talking with BHHS Varsity Football Head Coach about the program, he told the Wild Coast Compass “Flag football is open to grades k-8th grade and is usually runs during the summer months. Due to Covid-19 we needed to push it back to the Fall 2020. Brookings Harbor High School football players and coaches, help coach and referee the league. It is a way for our High School football program to give back to our community youth”.

“The best thing about flag football is that it is available to all ages and skill levels, and it allows our youth to play a modified version of football. The Bruin Football Association is seeing an increasing number of girls playing and we think that it is great! NFL Flag kind of brings back playing football in the backyard with friends from the neighborhood.”
