Limping Bruins Struggle at South Umpqua

Bruin football was on the road Friday night, traveling to Myrtle Creek to challenge a South Umpqua Lancer team coming off an overpowering win over the Coquille Red Devils the previous week.

The Lancers received the kick off to start the game and took the opening opportunity to put together a long drive that would culminate in a 4 yard run into the endzone to take an early 7-0 lead.

The Bruin offense, missing their starting quarterback #12, Grady Maylin, who was out due to injury, struggled to find it’s way against an experienced upper class team that pressured and disrupted the Bruins from their first possession.

But the Bruins stayed with the Lancers early, until Myrtle Creek put together a long drive and finishing it off with a 34 yard run into the endzone extending their lead to 14-0.

Sensing the Bruins struggle, the Lancers took full advantage, blitzing and cutting off running lanes leaving few options for freshman quarterback, #18, Jacob Devereaux to build on.

The Lancers had many scoring opportunities in the second quarter and would get the ball in the endzone two more times in the period, establishing a 27-0 lead at the half.

The Bruins would not help their chances after fumbling the ball in their first series of the second half, turning the ball over on their own 25 yard line, giving the Lancers another scoring opportunity ending in a 17 yard pass for a touchdown.

Myrtle Creek would pile on late, finding the endzone one more time on a 4 yard run into the endzone, making the score 42-0 as time ran out.

“We had to move a bunch pierces around due to some injuries.” coach Bavaro said after the game. “The kids stepped up and we just couldn’t match South Umpqua’s fire power. The kids battled to the end and we were able to get some of our young kids some reps in a varsity game.”

The Bruins will be home next Friday, as the undefeated Siuslaw Vikings make the trip from Florence to challenge the Bruins with kick-off scheduled at 7:00pm.
