A large earthquake struck off the northern California coast very early Tuesday morning initially measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale just after 2:36am.
The original quake struck less than 10 miles off the coast of Ferndale at a depth of just 6 miles and according to USGS reports, was felt in Newport, Oregon to the north, as far south of San Francisco, California, and as far as the Tahoe area to the east. Initial reports of damages included gas leaks, and possible structural damage to older buildings in Ferndale as well as Fortuna.
The quake was then followed by 15 aftershocks beginning with a 4.6 quake minutes later, and 14 other quakes in the same vicinity ranging from mid 2.0’s to upper 3’s including a 3.9 just outside Eureka in the following hour after the original jolt.
Regarding Tsunami, the USGS original reports were as stated, “An earthquake has occurred; a tsunami is not expected.” as of 3:00am Tuesday morning.
