After being on the road since early December, the Varsity Lady Bruins were excited to be home. Their opener against the Douglas Trojans was fast-paced from the beginning and the Lady Bruins kept their foot on the gas throughout.
The Lady Bruins found their comfort zone early scoring from the outside and under the basket almost at will. Freshman forward Lexi Schofield #1, led the Lady Bruins in the first period with 6 points including a 3 pointer. Sophomore guard Sidney Alexander #11, added a 3pointer of her own in the first and senior guard Abby Farmer #00 hit two of her three shots in the quarter for 4 points.
The Lady Bruins played their signature 2-3 man zone frustrating the Trojans holding them to just 14 points in the half as the Lady Bruins added another 8 points with 2 from senior center #4 Brianna Humphrey as Abby Farmer added 6 points to her halftime total.
The third period has been a weakness for the Lady Bruins this year, and coming out of the locker room was the same in this game. Some unfocused play caused some errant passes and poor shooting, letting Douglas outscore the Lady Bruins in the third quarter 9-7. After the game, Coach Schofield said “they made a run in the 3rd where we lost our discipline and focus defensively. Once we settled down and re-committed to keeping them off the free throw line, we were really tough”.
It was #4 Brianna Humphrey who kept the Lady Bruins in the game in the third period with 4 of the 7 Lady Bruins points in the period.
The fourth period was back and forth as Douglas pressed to get points on the board and the lady Bruins tightened up their defense. Abby Farmer scored 4 points and went 4 for 4 from the free throw line for 8 points and Lexi Schofield scored 2 of the 11 points in the fourth as the Lady Bruins maintained their 9 point lead.
When asked what the team took away from the season opener win, Coach Schofield said “It feels great to get off on the right foot to start the league. With the balance in our league this year, every game is important, so I felt it was critical not to dig ourselves a hole right at the start of the season.”
The Lady Bruins went on to beat the Douglas Trojans 41-32 and will go on to meet Suislaw next Tuesday at home at 6:00 pm.
