The Lady Bruin Basketball team started their league play Tuesday evening when the team went on the road and made the long trip to Douglas High School in Winston Oregon to take on the Douglas Lady Trojans.
The Lady Bruins, went into the game with the memories of last years tough matches in their minds, and didn’t take any chances of letting the Lady Trojans believe they were in the game. The Lady Bruins never trailed in the contest, however, the Lady Trojans were closest when they were able to tie up the game at 11 midway through the first quarter. But behind #1 sophomore Lexi Schofield’s 8 points in the first quarter, the Lady Bruins put 16 points on the board and led 16-13 at the end of the first.
In the second period, the Lady Bruins stepped up the defense holding the Lady Trojans to just 6 points in the period. Led by Sierra Fitzhugh’s 6 points in the second quarter, the Lady Bruins put a considerable gap between themselves and the Lady Trojans by putting up 13 points. The Lady Bruins went into the locker room with a 10 point lead with the scoreboard showing 29-19 Brookings.
The Lady Trojans came out in the third period intent to change the game by putting 11 points of offense on the board, but the Lady Bruins managed to win the third period even though they committed their seventh foul on the Lady Trojans before the third period was over. This put the Lady Trojans in the bonus and on the line for the rest of the game. With three 3 pointers in the period combined from #11, junior guard Sydney Alexander, #20 sophomore guard Lexee Murray, and Lexi Schofield, the Lady Bruins scored 13 points and extended their lead to 12 points going into the fourth period.
In the fourth period, Brookings-Harbor focused on keeping their lead by not fouling and putting the Lady Trojans on the line for free throws and easy points with the clock stopped. “It was a good game for us tonight. The girls played hard and were able to hold on through the ups and downs,” said Coach Schofield after the game.
The Lady Bruins will ride the momentum of their 50-39 first league game win into their next contest this Friday evening at home against the Sutherlin Lady Bulldogs, who will roll into town with their own first league win at 7:00 pm Friday night.
