The Lady Bruin varsity soccer team took the field Tuesday afternoon against the South Umpqua Lady Lancers as the regular season comes to a close.
The Lady Lancers, although their record does not reflect it, have played the Lady Bruins tough all year. Due to league issues, this was the third time these two teams have met in the last 3 weeks.
The Lady Bruins were slowed at mid-field by a determined Lady Lancer defense that did not allow the Lady Bruins fast break opportunities and held the Lady Bruins scoreless in the first half of play.
The Lady Bruins came out in the second half and attacked the Lady Lancer defense, driving the ball down into the Lady Lancer half of the field, and attacked the goal to insure a Lady Bruin win. 12:00 minutes into the second half the Lady Bruins were awarded a corner kick.
The corner kick would get lost in front of the goal and put in the net by Lady Bruin mid-fielder Megan Pearson putting the Lady Bruins up 1-0 at the 52:00 minute mark.
Much of the same would be the story of the 2nd half as the Lady Bruins refused to let the Lady Lancers put together an attack in the Lady Bruin defensive end, frustrating a determined Lady Lancer offense through out the game.
As the Lady Bruins forced play in the Lady Lancer half of the field, breaking the Lady Lancer backfield was still an issue as the Lady Lancer defense was happy to concede outside shots, as long as goals were not allowed on a Lady Bruin fastbreak. The Lady Bruins would strike again late in the half on another corner kick that landed in the goal box at the feet of senior striker Avana Pettus who wasted no time putting it in the back of the net giving the Lady Bruins the 2-0 victory.
The Lady Bruins will now finish out their regular season schedule on the road Thursday at Douglas taking on the 4-2-1 Douglas Lady Trojans on their way to coach Kyla Siri’s second year of post season play.
