Tuesday, September 25th, the Lady Bruins showed no signs of slowing down on their way to a lopsided 7-0 win over the 1-0-1 Douglas Lady Trojans.
The Lady Trojans came into the game with a good game plan of beating the Lady Bruins to the ball and not allowing themselves to be beat up the middle with the Lady Bruin fast break. It turned out to be a game plan that didn’t quite work out, as the Lady Bruins wore the Lady Trojans down with passing and relentless defense.
It did take some time for the Lady Bruins to adjust to the game plan, even though the game was primarily played in the Lady Trojan half of the field. Frustration set in for Douglas as the stingy interior defense of senior Mickey Fulton and sophomore Lexi Schofield continuously thwarted every attempt to break through and get a shot off on sophomore Keeper Annie Nation, who is yet to be scored on in league play.
The Lady Bruins finally struck on a corner kick cross that sophomore Laisha Olmedo #20 put past the Douglas keeper 27 minutes into the 1st half. The Lady Bruins had many opportunities in the first half that were stopped by the Douglas Keeper, or missed just wide or high.
But the Lady Trojans, who were clearly focused on the speed of Lady Bruin center striker Avana Pettus, couldn’t stop senior center mid-fielder Anna Serna from striking from 30 yards out after she broke through the defense with 47 minutes left in the 1st half, putting the Lady Bruins up 2-0 at the break.
The second half was an assault by the Lady Bruins pushing the ball into the penalty box with senior Sandra Sullivan finding the pass from Anna Serna in front of the goal and pounding the shot into the back of the net.
The game started to become physical as Douglas began to foul to slow down the Lady Bruin attack. Not to be deterred, junior Avana Pettus pushed the ball to just outside the middle defenders for Anna Serna, who wasted no time extending the Bruin lead 4-0.
The defense held strong, not allowing Douglas to break the offside trap, or put together an attack that resulted in a controlled or accurate shot on goal, allowing Brookings-Harbor Keeper Annie Nation to record her 5th shut-out on the year.
The Lady Bruins will be on the road for their next 3 games and will face a 1-0-2 Sutherlin Bulldog team Thursday, September 27th at Sutherlin at 4:00 pm.
