The Lady Bruins hosted the Sutherlin Lady Lancers Friday night in a contest that put two teams both with one win in a position to get themselves on a winning track as the 2022 season begins to take form.
In the first period of play, coach Schofield sent a high energy team out to the floor, and settled them into their base 2-3 defense with soft pressure on the ball handler in the Lady Lancer’s back court. The Lady Bruins defense set the pace, smothering the Lady Lancer offense and allowing 0 points in first 4:00 minutes of play, jumping out to a 7-0 lead.
The Lady Bruins continued to control the paint with Ashlyn Schofield #44 and Marissa Scott #15 cleaning up the boards, allowing no second shot opportunities to South Umpqua on the defensive boards while affording extra Lady Bruin opportunities on the offensive end. With out expending the extra energy applying a defensive press, the Lady Bruins built a commanding 18-1 lead after one period.
After Zoe Carlson #11 and Charlie Nolte #10 combined for 14 of the Lady Bruins 18 points in the period including each hitting early 3 pointers, the lady Bruins continued to dominate putting up another 13 points in the second, while defensively holding the Lady Lancers to just 3 points in the period. Senior, #10, Charlie Nolte led the way again hitting another 3 pointer while junior forward Marissa Scott #15 hit two baskets inside for 4 points.
With a now 31-4 lead going into the second half, the Lady Bruins fed senior Zoe Carlson who hit twice from behind the arc, while getting to the line 4 times driving in the paint. Faith Burton #4, Charlie Nolte #10, and Ashlyn Schofield #44 also hit baskets, leaving the Lady Bruins sitting on a 43-10 lead.
The Lady Bruins applied consistent defensive pressure throughout the game, and continued into the fourth period, holding the Lady Lancers to no points in the final period. Zoe Carlson and Charlie Nolte scored for the Bruins, and sophomore forward Aleah Muro #24, scored under the basket for the Lady Bruins, giving the Lady Bruins the 50-10 victory.
Talking with coach Schofield after the game, “It’s always a good test after a hard-fought, emotionally and physically draining win like we had Wednesday, so it was real good to see them come out with the energy and discipline we played with tonight. We were really locked in defensively in the first half and that really energized us, Zoe and Charlie were real good for us offensively tonight, knocking down open shots, and taking care of the ball, and the team made good decisions.”
The OSAA schedule has the Lady Bruins next game scheduled for Wednesday, February 2nd, on the road in Medford, taking on the St. Mary’s Challengers at 5:30pm.
