On a perfect sunny late summer afternoon, nothing screams ‘SUMMER IS OVER!’ quite like the shrill sound of a referee’s whistle at a school sports event. And just like that, BHHS varsity head coach Kyla Siri and her class of 2020 Lady Bruins were on the field picking up right where they left off last year.
The Marshfield Lady Pirates made the trip from Coos Bay to kick-off the 2020 season on the first day of School at Brookings-Harbor. After losing four seniors from last years team, this Lady Bruin team sent a message Tuesday afternoon dominating Marshfield from kick-off to final whistle.
Defensively the Lady Bruins were solid behind the play of juniors #20 Laisha Olmedo and Lexi Schofield who refused to allow Marshfield an offensive attack through out the contest forcing play on the Marshfield half of the field. Marshfield was limited to few offensive opportunities which they used to try and break the offside trap over the top and on the ground to no avail.
The offense started the game a little sluggish, that is until junior striker Faith Burton #16 found the back of the net just 7 minutes into the new season. Sophomore Hannah James #5 proved to be a puzzle to Marshfield who could not figure out how to stop her as her 4 goals led all scorers. Tilly Peters #4 and Avana Pettus #10 both added to the Lady Bruin victory.
The Lady Bruins will spend the rest of the week preparing for a 2:00pm match-up this SATURDAY at BHHS soccer field against St. Bernards Academy.
